projects & case studies

current & recent work

From bespoke training programmes and organisational development to learning partnerships and reflective supervision, these projects illustrate the range of ways we work with organisations to build social pedagogical thinking and practice.

LEAVING CARE · SPPA ENDORSED

House Projects support young people leaving care through this critical transition period. We have co-developed and delivered a social pedagogy practice learning programme for NHP practitioners and managers, providing a theoretical grounding in social pedagogy and exploring how its principles strengthen the NHP approach. This is the only practice-based programme of its kind and endorsed by the Social Pedagogy Professional Association (SPPA).

CHILD POVERTY · LEARNING PARTNER

We have served as learning partner for the F:ACES (Family: Adult & Child Enhanced Services) pilot project, supporting the embedding of a Human Learning Systems (HLS) approach to tackling child poverty. Working alongside the project team, we analysed the systemic drivers of poverty, capturing practitioner insights, and set up local learning circles to help identify the conditions that enable a relational, strengths-based approach to flourish in community settings.

CHILDREN’S SERVICES · TRAINING

We’re delivering our Courageous Conversations course to children’s services practitioners across the West London Alliance, a partnership of seven London boroughs. Participants explore how to engage in honest, compassionate and meaningful conversations with children, families and colleagues in ways that improve relationships, build trust and enable genuine change.

ADULT SERVICES · WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

We have been delivering our relationship-centred practice course for newly qualified social workers undertaking the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) in adult services at Bradford MBC. The course draws on the core social pedagogy concepts — including the Diamond Model, Haltung and the 3 Ps — to deepen practitioners’ understanding of and commitment to relational approaches in their work with adults.

RESIDENTIAL CARE · TRAINING & SUPERVISION

We have been providing bespoke social pedagogical supervision training for managers at Sisu Services, drawing on core social pedagogy values of Haltung, dialogue and reflective practice. Alongside the initial training on what makes for a meaningful developmental supervision environment and people’s prior experience of line management supervision, we have also provided ongoing reflective external supervision, helping managers to build a reflective culture and to lead their teams in more relational ways.

our history

ThemPra has been working to develop social pedagogy across the UK since our founding in 2008. These projects represent some of the organisations we have had the privilege of working alongside over the years. Click any entry to find out more.

Windmill Therapeutics (Ireland)
Whole-staff social pedagogy training — day services for adults with intellectual disabilities
Find out more ↓

We provided social pedagogy training for the entire staff team at Windmill Therapeutics, creating a shared language and framework for relationship-centred practice across the organisation, which supports adults with intellectual disabilities in Wexford, Ireland. Engaging whole teams rather than individual practitioners is one of the most effective ways to embed social pedagogical values and build a coherent relational culture throughout an organisation.

Fife Voluntary Action (Scotland)
Co-production training and capacity building — Whole Families Well-Being Project
Find out more ↓

We worked with Fife Voluntary Action to provide co-production training and capacity building in support of their Whole Families Well-Being Project. The work focused on developing the team’s understanding and practice of co-production, including how FVA’s lived experience facilitators could co-design services with families who have direct experience of accessing support. This approach placed authentic co-production and power-sharing at the heart of how the project was designed and delivered.

We Are Juno (England)
Social pedagogy and relational leadership training — children’s home
Find out more ↓

We delivered both social pedagogy training and relational leadership training with the team opening Juno’s first children’s home. Working at the very start, before the home opened, gave the whole team a shared relational framework and helped establish a strong, coherent culture from day one. It also equipped Juno with internal capability to grow social pedagogy in their other homes. This reflects our belief that the conditions for social pedagogical practice are best built together, right from the outset and with self-sustainability at the heart.

Kibble Education and Care (Scotland)
Social pedagogy training and facilitator development — children’s homes
Find out more ↓

We provided social pedagogy training for practitioners at Kibble Education and Care in Scotland, followed by a facilitator training strand to build internal capacity. By developing Kibble’s own facilitators alongside the initial training, the project enabled the organisation to continue embedding social pedagogy independently, creating lasting change that reflects their unique organisation.

St Christopher’s Fellowship (England / Isle of Man)
Social pedagogy training with in-house co-facilitator — children’s homes
Find out more ↓

We delivered social pedagogy training at St Christopher’s Fellowship in partnership with an in-house co-facilitator. By developing an internal facilitator alongside the programme, we built lasting capacity within the organisation and ensured that learning continued to be developed and embedded in everyday practice long after the formal training was complete.

Camphill Scotland
Pilot project — residential care for adults with disabilities
Find out more ↓

We worked with two Camphill communities as part of a Camphill Scotland pilot project exploring social pedagogy in adult care. This was one of our earlier projects and an important step in demonstrating that social pedagogy has relevance across all areas of social care, not only children’s services. The project laid early groundwork for what has since become a much wider interest in social pedagogy within adult care settings.

Head, Heart, Hands — The Fostering Network (England / Scotland)
Demonstration programme — foster care
Find out more ↓

We were a delivery partner for Head, Heart, Hands, an innovative demonstration programme led by The Fostering Network that introduced social pedagogy to foster care in England and Scotland. The programme explored how social pedagogical principles could inform the relationship between foster carers, children, families and social workers, thus creating a valuable framework for fostering that placed relationships and the whole child at its centre.

Head, Heart, Hands represented an important milestone in demonstrating the relevance of social pedagogy beyond residential care, and in building a wider movement of practitioners committed to relational approaches in foster care. The programme was independently evaluated by Dr Lisa Holmes and Dr Sam McDermitt.

Orkney Islands Council (Scotland)
Pilot training programme — interprofessional team
Find out more ↓

We ran a pilot social pedagogy training course for a multi-disciplinary group of professionals in Orkney, introducing practitioners across children’s services to the principles, philosophy and key theories of social pedagogy and exploring their practical application in their particular practice context. The programme provided a shared language and ethos, creating space for participants to reflect on their own Haltung and relational practice.

The programme was independently evaluated by Dr Graham McPheat and Dr Evelyn Vrouwenfelder, contributing to the growing body of evidence on social pedagogy training in the UK.

Aberlour Child Care Trust (Scotland)
Social pedagogy training — children’s homes and fostering
Find out more ↓

We delivered social pedagogy training for all staff across Aberlour Child Care Trust’s Sycamore Services. The programme introduced practitioners to social pedagogical thinking and explored how its principles could strengthen the quality of care and the relationships at the heart of residential child care and foster care.

The programme was independently evaluated by Professor Ian Milligan (CELCIS), contributing to the wider evidence base for social pedagogy in the UK.

Essex County Council (England)
Social pedagogy training & development — residential service
Find out more ↓

We co-designed and delivered a sustained programme of social pedagogy training and development across all 12 children’s homes in Essex, working with frontline staff and managers to embed social pedagogical thinking into everyday practice. The programme included both initial training, ongoing team development and strategic longer-term support to help teams across the service develop a shared language and culture rooted in relational practice.

A report on the project’s approach, learning, and outcomes was published in the International Journal of Social Pedagogy (IJSP), making this work part of the wider evidence base for social pedagogy in the UK.

wider work

Alongside our work with individual organisations, ThemPra has developed and contributed to a number of wider initiatives that bring practitioners and organisations together to explore, develop, and share social pedagogical thinking and practice.

NETWORK · FREE TO JOIN · SINCE 2009

Founded by us and a few other organisations in 2009, the SPDN is a free grassroots network for practitioners, service managers, students and academics to share ideas, connect and collectively develop their understanding of social pedagogy in practice. Since then the SPDN has held more than 20 events across the UK ranging from large in-person events to online events and hybrid mini-events taking place simultaneously in different locations, all connected via Zoom. Co-organised by ThemPra, the Social Pedagogy Professional Association (SPPA), and the Global Alliance for Social Pedagogy and Social Education, the SPDN brings together more than 1,200 people.

PEER LEARNING · FUNDED BY ESMÉE FAIRBAIRN FOUNDATION

In partnership with the National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum and supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, we co-developed and co-facilitated a peer learning programme exploring relational practice with care-experienced young people. The programme brought together practitioners from across the leaving care sector to reflect on practice, share learning and explore how relationship-centred approaches can better support young people through transition and beyond. The initiative also included a free webinar series open to practitioners across the UK to introduce them to the learning resources we have curated.

PEER LEARNING · HUMAN LEARNING SYSTEMS

We’re also part of the Human Learning Systems (HLS) Collaborative, a growing movement of organisations working to apply a more relational, complexity-informed and learning-focused approach to public services. As part of the HLS Collaborative, we have contributed to publications and conferences, hosted webinars and investigated together with Collaborate CIC how Human Learning Systems can advance equity and enable a relational approach to leadership. We feel that there are significant synergies between HLS and social pedagogy and that social pedagogical concepts and principles can help put Human Learning Systems into practice.

LEARNING COMMUNITY · FREE AND OPEN TO ALL

The Social Pedagogy Reading Club is a free, informal space for practitioners, students and academics to come together and discuss journal articles or books relevant to social pedagogy. Through the structured conversation, we can jointly deepen our reflections and integrate new perspectives into practice. Anyone with an interest in social pedagogy is welcome to join, no matter how new to the field they are. Sessions take place quarterly online and are free of charge.

ThemPra has also contributed to the following programmes and alliances.

Global Alliance for Social Pedagogy and Social Education
International network of national associations
Find out more ↓

We are a founding partner and active member of the Global Alliance for Social Pedagogy and Social Education, a network connecting organisations, practitioners and institutions across the globe who are developing social pedagogy within their national contexts and want to learn from other countries. The Global Alliance co-organises the SPDN alongside ThemPra and SPPA, and collaborates on developing resources, events and opportunities to connect the international social pedagogy community.

Exploring Social Pedagogy at Turbulent Times
Webinar series — available on YouTube
Find out more ↓

Exploring Social Pedagogy at Turbulent Times is a webinar series in which practitioners, academics and ThemPra explore what social pedagogy has to offer in times of social, political and professional uncertainty. Each session brings together voices from across the field to reflect on the challenges facing those who work relationally and consider how social pedagogical values and thinking can sustain and guide practice when the conditions around us feel unstable.

EU Leonardo Mobility programme
International exchange — UK practitioners working in Danish social pedagogy settings
Find out more ↓

ThemPra coordinated an EU Leonardo Mobility programme that enabled UK practitioners to travel to Denmark and work alongside experienced social pedagogues in Danish settings, such as children’s residential homes, nurseries, after school clubs and a youth psychiatry. This immersive international exchange gave participants direct, first-hand experience of social pedagogy in practice — encountering a culture in which social pedagogical values are embedded in everyday professional life — and created rich learning that participants brought back to their own organisations and settings.
